PVC, champion of versatility
Since its discovery in 1835 by the French physicist Victor Regnault, PVC has revolutionised the construction and health industries as well as the packaging industry. It has also become a part of all areas of our daily life.
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is the only commonly used plastic material of which more than 50% is made up of a raw ingredient of mineral origin, widely available in nature: salt.
Fundamentally, it is made up of two basic products: 57% is a saline solution and 43% an ethylene solution, made from refining crude oil.
Out of all the plastics in the world it is the one that consumes the least amount of fossil fuels: only 0.6% of extracted petroleum.
Thanks to the link between salt and ethylene, PVC has advantages all-round: it is light, solid, fire-resistant, with remarkable plasticity and longevity; it is also impermeable, rot-proof and unaffected by an aggressive climate. To crown it all, it is 100% recyclable.
It is these qualities that make it the champion of versatility and make it worth using in so many different areas.
From garden furniture to medical tubes and flasks, from packaging to toys, as well as cars, cables and pipes, credit cards and in particular, buildings and construction (from floor coverings to window frames); there is no area that does not use this amazing material.
Polyvinyl chloride made by KEM ONE help to make our lives easier and safer, and even, more beautiful, as a large number of designers, just like their more famous peers, have fallen for PVC’s extraordinary qualities.
